MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BOARD OF CANVASSERS
OF THE CITY OF LIVONIA
Pursuant to Section 12 of Chapter III of the Charter of the City of
Livonia, the members of the City Council met as the Board of Canvassers of such
City on Thursday, December 17, 1953, at 7.30 P M , at the City Hall, 33001
Five Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan.
The meeting was called to order at the above time and place by the
President of the Council, Harry S Wolfe, who acted as Chairman of the Board
Roll was called with the following results: Present, Harry S. Wolfe, Wilson W.
Edgar, Raymond E. Grimm, Nettie Carey, John W. Whitehead and William J. Taylor
Absent Harold Bower.
The City Clerk read to the Board the contents of certified statements
of the returns of each precinct, as prepared and certified by the election in-

spectors of each precinct and as filed in her office and these returns were
publicly examined and canvassed by the Board and were approved
By Councilman Taylor, seconded by Councilman Grimm, and adopted as
follows, it was
RESOLVED, that the following statement of votes cast
in the Special City Election held on December 14, 1953;
THE WHOLE NUMBER OF VOTES CAST WITHIN THE CITY OF LIVONIA
was two thousand eight hundred seventy-seven (2,877).

The Total number of votes cast on Proposal #1 were 2,867,
and they were given in the following way: 2,700 167
The total number of votes cast on Proposal #2 were 2,844,
and they-were given in the following way; 785 2,059
The total number of votes cast on Proposal #3 were 2,847,
and they were given ihn the following way: 749 2,098
The total number of votes cast on Proposal #4 were 2,849,
Umm and they were given in the following way- 891 1,958
The total number of votes cast on Proposal #5 were 2,792,
and they were given in the following way: 975 1,817
be and hereby is approved and certified in each and every respect.

A roll call vote was conducted on the foregoing resolution with the following result:
AYES- Edgar, Grimm, Carey, Whitehead, Taylor and Wolfe
NAYS: None.
Chairman Wolfe declared the foregoing resolution adopted and directed that
certified copies of the same be prepared and signed by each memb<r of the Board.
By Councilman Carey, seconded by Councilman Whitehead and adopted as
follows, it was:
RESOLVED, that the Board of Canvassers make and sign the
following certificate:
CERTIFICATE OF DETIINATION

COUNTY OF WAYNE )
We, the undersigned members of the City Council, acting as the Board of
Canvassers pursuant to Section 12 of Chapter III of the Charter, do hereby
meet on this first Thursday following the Special City Election held on
December 14, 1953, and publicly canvass the returns of such election,
and do hereby determine the result of such canvass and the results of
the votes cast within the City of Livonia on the following amendments:
Amendment #1, An Amendment to Provide for the Election of the City
Clerk, and do hereby determine that said Amendment #1 was duly adopted
by 2,700 Yes votes and 167 No votes.
Amendment #2, An Amendment to Provide for a Term of Office of Four Years
for all Elective, Administrative Officers, and do hereby determine that
said Amendment #2 was duly rejected by 2,059 No votes and 785 Yes votes
Amendment #3, An Amendment to Provide for Determination of Compensation
of Elective, Appointive, Administrative, Legislative and Judicial Officers
by Ordinance, and do hereby determine that said Amendment #3, was duly
rejected by 2,098 No votes and 749 Yes voted
Amendment #4, An Amendment to Provide Terms of Five Years for Members
of the Parks and Recreation Commission, and do hereby determine that

said Amendment #4 was duly rejected by 1,958 No votes and 891 Yes votes.
Amendment #5, An Amendment to Abolish the Justice Court and Create a
Municipal Court Pursuant to the Provisions of Section 21 of Act 279,
Public Acts of Michigan, 1909, as amended, and do hereby determine that
said Amendment #5 was duly rejected by 1,817 No votes and 975 Yes votes
We further certify that this meeting was attended by Councilmen
Wolfe, Edgar, Grimm, Carey, Whitehead and Taylor, who constituted a quorum;
that Councilman Bower was absent, and that this meeting was held at the
City Hall, 33001 Five Mile Road at 7.30 P M
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, we have hereunto attached our signatures on this
17th day of December, 1953
A roll call vote was conducted on the foregoing resolution with the following result:
AYES• Edgar, Grimm, Carey, Whitehead, Taylor and Wolfe
NAYS: None
Chairman Wolfe stated that the foregoing resolution was adopted and
directed that such Certificate of Determination be prepared and be signed by each
member of the Board
On motion of Councilman Taylor, seconded by Councilman Carey, and
unanimously passed, the meeting was adjourned at 7:50 P M., December 17, 1953
