HomeMy WebLinkAboutTraffic Commission 2011-07-14MINUTES OF THE 669th REGULAR MEETING LIVONIA TRAFFIC COMMISSION The 668th Regular meeting of the Livonia Traffic Commission held in the third floor conference room at City Hall on Thursday, July 14, 2011, was called to order by Chairman Joe Steele_ PRESENT: Commissioners Gordon Draper, John Katers, Jim Pulicelli, along with Police Officer Sergeant John Gibbs and City Engineer Todd Zilincik_ VISITORS ATTENDING: Dave Hudson 9327 Houghton, Livonia (section 31){ Terry Kasper 9425 Butwell (section 31), David Michaelson 17415 Sunset, Livonia (section 11) The minutes of the June 9, 2011, meeting were reviewed. Upon a motion by Gordon Draper, seconded! by Joe Steele, it was approved by unanimous vote that: 11-55 RESOLVED the commission minutes from June 9, 2011, are approved as presented. Agenda Hem: 5: David Michaelson, section 11, expressed concern with reckless/careless drivers throughout his neighborhood, specifically on Bobrich and Sunset Streets. He expressed concern for children and other residents. After much discussion regarding driving habits and traffic patterns, Mr Michaelson was satisfied with the current level of police presence and enforcement —Mr. Michaelson will contact the police department directly should unsafe conditions become unacceptable. No further action is required! Agenda Hem: None: David Hudson and Terry Kasper, section 31, addressetl the commission. Collectively, their concern is centered on the volume of vehide traffic in their neighborhoed_ David addressed the commission during the February 10, 2011, and June 9, 2011, Traffic Commission meetings with the same concerns_ SeMeent Gibbsstatedthattmffcpatmlvehides monitor conditions in this area –speed violation n not their primary concem�mfic volume is Again, after a lengthy discussion ranging from public road usage –to residents use only, 'speed bumps' on roadways, dosing the southernmost street entrance on Houghton Street and the local apartment complex, etc, it was agreed that speed limit signs could benefit the street traffic Upon a motion by Gordon Drainer, seconded by John Katers, it was approved by unanimous vote that 11- 56, RESOLVED to install 25 mph speed signs on Houghton Street just north of Joy Read and Houghton Street just south of West Chicago. Agenda Hem: 1: Additional information is required Item n moved to August 11, 2011 meeting_ Agenda Hem: 2: Sergeant John Gibbs is requesting yield signs on Wayne and Industrial Roads borderingsections28829_ Aftera Iriefdiscussion, supportingsgnage in this light industrial area, and a motion from Gordon Drainer with support from John Katers, it was approved by unanimous vote that 11-57 RESOLVED to install W34 yield signs on Wayne andlor Industrial Roads alerting vehicle drivers to oncoming truck/vehicle crossing in the area. Agenda Hem: 3: Sergeant John Gibbs B requesting lane restriction signs on eastbound and westbound Industrial Road just east of Merriman Road. Sergeant Gibbs stated that recent traffic lane striping on Industrial Read now requires signs claing drivers to vehicle lane restrictions. Through a motion tram Gordon Draper and supported by John Katers it was supported by unanimous vote that: 11-58 RESOLVED to install ane restriction signs on eastbound and westbound Industrial Road just east of Merriman Read. Additionally, the Forestay Department should clear tree branches and other green vegetation that interferes with the drivers' vision on this roadway. There was a Iengby discussion regarding the purpose, Iocati a iming antl function of the traffic signals in the area of Holmes Middle School and Myrna Street and upon a motion from John Katers, seconded by Gordon Draper, supportetl by unanimous vote and based upon the following three pieces of information: 11-59 RESOLVED that the engineering tlepartment proceed with the removal of the traffic signal at Myrna and Newburgh Roads based upon the following three paces of information: 1) November20,200BT.I.A.(TmfficimpmvemeMAssociation)ta csWdy, 2) Trafficstudyfrom20011-2011, 3) Based on engineering for a fully modernized traffic signaling device Holmes Middle School. Additionally, we recommend that the Engineering Department post this information on their website. Upon a motion by John Katers, seconded! by Gordon Draper, it was approved! by unanimous vote than RESOLVED, that the meeting be adjourned M 10:15 pm.
