LIVONIA TRAFFIC COMMISSION
The 684th Regular meeting of the Livonia Traffic Commission was held in the third floor conference room at
City Hall on Thursday, February 14, 2013; it was called to order by Chairman Joe Steele.
PRESENT: Commissioners: John Raters, Kevin Priddy, Gordon Draper, Cindi Quinn -Ventura, Gordon St
John and Jim Pohcelli and City of Livonia Police Officer: Sergeant John Gibbs.
Chairman Opening Comments: Joe Steele announced that he would be adding non -agenda items to tonight's
meeting: 1) Request from the Engineering Department for traffic control devices on Newburgh Road north of
Six Mile m North Laurel Park Drive and 2) an e-mail request from Angie Micheline for a No U Tum sign on
Middlebelt Road at Oakley Roads (section 23).
Agenda Rem 1: The minutes of the January 10, 2013, meeting was reviewed.
Upon a motion by Gordon Draper, seconded by John Eaters, it was approved by unanimous vote that:
13114 RESOLVED, the commission minutes from January 13, 2013, are approved as prevented.
Non -Agenda Iteml: A request from the Engineering Department for placement of traffic control devices on
Newburgh Road from Six Mile to North Laurel Park Drive (this section of Newburgh Road was rebuilt during
2012). Upon a motion from Gordon Draper, seconded by Gordon St John, it was approved by unanimous vote
that:
13115 RESOLVED, the traffic control devices on Newburgh Road north of Six Mile to North
Laurel Park Drive comply with the construction plans on MDOT (Michigan Department of
Transportation) project number 114913A sheets 39, 40 and 41 as presented.
Agenda Item 2: (follow up on Agenda Item 2 from the January 10, 2013, Traffic Commission Meeting):
Request from Sarah Nadeau Alexander for a replacement church identification sign on Newburgh Road for
Newburgh Methodist Church, 36500 Am Arbor Trail. Presently, church identification signs exist on Am Arbor
Trail and Newburgh Road. After a very lengthy, open discussion regarding my church, civic, business, or my
other related non -traffic control signs on the right-of-ways, it was concluded that the Traffic Commission lacks
authority to set City of Livonia policy on non -traffic control devices. Upon a motion from John Katers,
seconded by Kevin Priddy, it was approved by unanimous vote that:
13110 RESOLVED, this req near be referred to the Engineering Department for proper
disposition.
Update Information: City of Livonia Engineer Todd Zihncik has sent a letter to Newburgh Methodist Church
informing them of the policy for replacement of church signs.
Agenda Item 3: (follow up on Agenda Item 6 from the January 10, 2013, Traffic Commission Meeting): Open
discussion and review of St Mary Mercy Hospital signs. This topic was first brought to the Traffic Commission
in July of 2012. Recommendations and follow up requests to obtain a better understanding of the request were
made to the consultant however, numerous attempts for clarification of the program from the Engineering
Department and Traffic Commission have gone unanswered. Todd Zilincik agreed to, once again, try to reach
the individual responsible for the sign change. He will advise us next month of his progress.
Update Information: According to Todd there has been no update to their request.
NonAgendaItem 2: An e-mail request from Angie Micheline for a No U Tum sign on Middlebelt A Oakley
Roads (section 23). Joe is in contact with Angie regarding her request and clarification of her request There
was a discussion regarding understanding the request and possible authorized placement of the sign. Joe will by
to arrange to have Angie attend a future meeting so we can obtain a better understanding of the request and
possible solutions.
RESOLVED, that the meeting he adjourned at 8:20 pm.
