LIVONIA TRAFFIC COMMISSION
The 70r Regular meeting of the Livonia Traffic Commission was held in the third -floor
conference room at City Hall on Thursday, February 12, 2015; it was called to order by Gordon
Draper A 7:30 p.m.
PRESENT: Commissioners: Jim Keller, John Eaters, Gordon Draper, Tom Ambers; and City
of Livonia Police Officer: Sergeant Joseph Boitos.
Commissioner Gordon Draper has agreed to urn the meeting in Chairperson Jim Policelli's
absence.
VISITORS ATTENDING: Residents Dave Bugnell and Randy & Carey Bachman regarding
the Meadowbrook Street "No U -Turn" sign.
Agenda Item 1: Formal introduction of newly -appointed Traffic Commissioner Tom Ambers.
Agenda Item 2: The minutes of the January 8, 2015, meeting was reviewed.
Upon a motion by John Eaters and seconded by Gordon Draper, it was approved by majority
vote that:
15-177 RESOLVED, that the commission minutes from January 8, 2015, are
approved as presented.
Agenda Item 4: Mr. Bugnell resides on Meadowbrock in section 20. He addressed the ongoing
St. Mary Hospital expansion which has opened a new driveway on the hospital campus property.
The traffic leaving the new driveway may tum left or right on Levan Road, but oftentimes goes
straight. This causes that traffic to go eastbound onto Meadowbrook and then complete a U -tum
around the neighborhood boulevard at the beginning ofMeadowbrook Street. Mr. Bugo ell lives
3 houses east of Levan Road and commented that cars are either clipping the tum too close to the
median or nearly running into the fire hydrant in front of his residence. Both Mr. Bugnell and the
Bachman agreed the traffic seems to be worse during the morning and afternoon cash hours.
The commission pointed out that installing a "No U -Turn" sign may deter some of the traffic
from toping around, but it will not stop it Furthermore, it could add to vehicle traffic honing
around in private driveways. Ultimately, the residents present at the meeting asked for a traffic
radar box on the street, along with adding a speed limit sign, which the residents feel should be
placed. Sergeant Boitos will investigate the speed limit signage and the placement of the radar
box when the waster weather breaks. Sergeant Boitos also asked the residents present to keep the
commission informed of changes in the traffic, especially after the reconstruction of Levan is
completed.
Agenda Item 3: The resident A 16125 Merriman Road, section 14 (corner of Merriman and
Puritan) asked the Commission to consider the placement of a Two -Direction Large Arrow Sign
(WI -7). She advised traffic wesilmund on Puritan will oftentimes use her private driveway
thinking it is a continuation of Puritan, potentially causing harm to her family or property. The
Commission has recommended a W1-7 two -directional sign to Wayne County officials for their
approval. Upon a motion by Tom Ambers, seconded by James Keller, it was approved
unanimously that:
15-178 RESOLVED, the Traffic Commission will make a recommendation to
Wayne County officials for their approval of Two -Directional W1-7 sign at this
location.
