Economy
Livonia's economic rebound is in full farce this year
We're happy to see home values begin to rebound this year. When it comes to jobs, the lat-
est jobless rate for Livonia shows 4.217o unemployment, well below the jobless rate in our
region, state or nation. Meanwhile, total vacancy in Livonia's industrial market is about 7.7%,
which is a new 10-year low for vacant space. The vacancy rate in Livonia for office and indus-
trial flex markets remain soft at about 15%.
Across Livonia, businesses are drawing up blueprints, backhoes are moving dirt,
beams are going up and finishing touches are being added.
• Plans are moving forward for Michigan's second Dave & Buster's, a
40,000-square-foot restaurant and amusement complex (1-275 and Seven Mlle),
which should be an exciting new addition to Livonia"s entertainment
opportunities.
• The new Menards home improvement and lumber store growing
on the west side of Middlebelt, north of
the railroad viaduct, will open later this i
summer. In addition, one or two new
full-service restaurants are looking at
building near Menards.
• There are few sites that generate
more questions than the former Frank's
Nursery at Five Mile and Levan. We can
happily report the entire strip mall will be
torn down and a new 40,000-square-
foot medical office constructed for Mendelson Orthopedics. Meanwhile, south and east of
that corner, Masri Orthodontics
is building a two-story medical
building on Levan.
The list of businesses that
are renovating or moving to

Free outside water meter reading device offered
Good news? For the first time, the City of Livonia is able to offer business and residential
water customers a time-saving outside meter reading device at no additional cost to the custom r.
That is good news because outside meter reading devices are more convenient for customers
and increase efficiency and decrease costs for the Livonia Water system.
These outside meter reading devices will help ensure that customer readings are done in a
timely and accurate manner. The device eliminates the inconvenience of residents letting a meter
reader into their home or business for normal quarterly reads, or for residents to read their own
meter and send the billing department an owner-read card. It will also help eliminate the need
for an estimate to be used for billing purposes.
If you have an inside water meter, you can schedule an appointment for
installation of an outside meter reading device by calling the Department of
Public Services at (734)466-2655. Someone must be at the house or business
during installation, which takes about an hour. -

All invited to help Fallen Heroes project
Donations are being accepted from residents and businesses interested in contributing
to Livonia's Fallen Heroes Monument at Larry Nehasil Park, being constructed at the former
Civic Center Park just west of City Hall.
Contributors may purchase engraved brick pavers or donate toward numerous other im-
provements planned to honor the memory of Livonia's Public Safety Officers
who have lost their lives in service to the community.
To purchase a paver or donate contact Donna Nehasil at (734) 536-7865.

hen out biking during the nicer months ahead, make sure you take a
few moments out to check out your bicycles. Before riding each time,
give your bikes the quick ABC check, which includes checking the air

sprockets.
Adjust your seat height for yourself and family members each season, and
adjust your bike helmets as well.
When possible, try to avoid busy streets and take rides through the
subdivisions with sidewalks instead. You should have reflectors on your
bikes, and if you must ride after dark, take special precaution with a light.

Livonia Housing Commission & Livonia Public Schools
Building Trades Partnership Program
It has been the pleasure of the Livonia Housing Commission—Office of Community Development to partner with the Livonia
Public Schools Building Trades program regarding housing rehabilitation projects. The City provides the home, the students
provide the labor for building rehab and trade contractors complete the job where necessary.
On this particular home, the fourth in our partnership, some donations were made to the program by community businesses.
Specifically, Lowe's secured paint through Valspar and Lee's Wholesale provided donations relative to the vinyl siding. Thank you to
our community supporters!
Under the supervision of Community Development and Livonia Public Schools Building Trades Program staff, the students have
been able to learn basic skills of the construction trades through hands-on participation with projects such as roofing, siding, and
the installation of drywall, hardwood flooring, ceramic tiles, interior doors, windows, moldings, and painting.
The Livonia Housing Commission is proud to provide these field experience projects which place the students in real-world
construction settings allowing them the opportunity to see the realities of day-to-day life in the building trades. We look forward to
a continued relationship with the Livonia Career Technical Center Building Trades Program.
