MINUTES OF THE SsunTSMITH SPECIAL
MEETING OF THE PLANNING COM6MISSION
The seventeenth special meeting of the Planning Commission was held on
July 14, 1951 at 33110 Five Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan.
Chairman Bentley called the meeting to order at approximately 12:20 PM.
Boll call was taken with the following result:
Present: George Bentley Clarence Jahn
Helen Byers Robert MacIntyre
Dallas Hay
Absent: Harold Bower Carson Johnston
Edwin Conway Walter Russell
Also present were Mayor Jesse Ziegler; Wm Brashear, City Attorney and Malcolm
Waring, Planning Consultant.
Mr. Harry Kinyon and Mr. A. C. Schroder were present to submit the proposal
of land for the Civic Center.
Chairman Bentley asked Mr. MacIntyre to take over at this point.
Mr. Maclntyre briefly reviewed the situation in order to bring Mayor Ziegler
up-to-date. Mr. Kinyon represents the owners of land (176 acres) on NE and
NW corners of Schoolcraft and Merriman Roads and is willing to deed 15 acres
to the City of Livonia with no strings attached, providing the Planning Com-
mission names it and uses same for the Civic Center.
Mr. Kinyon: The property is for sale and I have some people interested in
it. These people have seriously considered this land and we had seen in the
paper that sites were being considered for the Civic Center. There would be
no tie-up as far as placing the city under obligation. We are aware that it
will buildup if the Civic Center goes there.
Mayor Ziegler: Do you expect us to run a sewer project up there?
Mr. Kinyon: No, eventually it will be there.
Upon questioning, Mr. Kinyon would not reveal who he represented. Mr. Kinyon
advised that they intend to make residential use of the property and he didnt
think they intended to put any business in there. Mr. Kinyon was unable to
say how soon new homes would be put in that vicinity.
Mr. Kinyon advised the Commission that he had property on both sides of
Merriman and the Commission can make its own selection of land, within reason.
Miss Byers asked about the corner of Schoolcraft and Merriman and Mr. Kinyon
said that would be okay too.
Mr. Kinyon advised that his whole deal hinged on the Planning Commission's
selection of land, and then his buyers would bay the property and dedicate
same to the City of Livonia.
Mr. Brashear advised that there will also be a plan of putting in business
buildings to attract new stores, and Mr. Kinyon's people should consider
that plan.

Mr. Kinyon said that the people who are interested in the land are not private
individuals, but a growing concern and when asked how large a concern, he said
big enough.
Mayor Ziegler: I would like to have the cards on the table for a change.
Mr. Kinyon: I will get nay people here. Let me know when your meeting is.
This should cinch the deal when they find out that you would like the
Merriman Road area. I think they will come right oat in the open. We will
have it put in writing. I will have information for you by Wednesday night.
At 12:55 PM both Mr. Schroder and Mr. Kinyon left the meeting.
Chairman Bentley announced a recess to await Mr. Standiford.
The meeting was again called to order at 1:20 PM.
Mr. Bentley asked Mr. Standiford what kind of an offer he had to make.
After a discussion it was brought out that the Planning Commission is not
seeking corner property and Mr. Standiford agreed to make a study, but would
not commit himself until he had talked with the owner, Mr. Petersime. He
will attempt to have the information by Wednesday, but it will be subject to
Mr. Petersimela approval. Mr. Standiford agreed to call the secretary Tues-
day afternoon regarding what they have to offer and this will be confirmed
by letter.
Upon a motion made by Helen Byers, seconded and unanimously carried, it was
RESOLVED, that this meeting be adjourned.
The meeting was adjourned at 2PM with the possibility of a special meeting
being called previous to the regular meeting on July 25th.
