Livonia... continues to attract new
and renewed business investment
From retail to residential or office to industrial, business owners and developers
continue to invest with confidence in our Livonia community. Development and
redevelopment projects are occurring in all corners of the community, making it
clear that Livonia is a preferred destination to live, work, play and grow! Whether
it's a minor renovation or a newly constructed corporate headquarters, the current
growth trend in our local economy is nothing short of...
EN ERG IZI NG!
Below arejust a few of the exciting development sites
to check out around town this season.
"In 1945, my grandfather opened a road side
apple stand right here in Livonia, which
evolved into Joe's Produce Gourmet Market.
We've watched generations grow up with
Joe's, and we're so grateful for their loyalty.
Our renovation will deliver an even better
shopping experience for all!"

Looking forward to an
AmazonAing year.'
Moving into 2017, I am convinced that our city
will continue to build on the success achieved
last year.
One reason for my optimism is the reaction
of people I talked to soon after it was announced
that Amazon plans to build a huge, 1 million -
square -foot customer fulfillment center and hire
at least 1,000 employees. The smiles, high -fives
and congratulations went on for weeks.
The fact that Amazon is building on part of
what was once an old General Motors spring and
bumper plant is very exciting to me, especially
since it seemed for a long time that this property
would never be redeveloped.
just as exciting is the work being done at
another 1 million -square -foot former GM auto
plant by Ashley Capital, the same property owner
and developer building the Amazon distribution
center. The old GM Powertrain plant on Middle
Belt is being turned into the newly named Livonia
Distribution Center, which will be filled with
manufacturing and warehouse jobs.
What's really cool
is that all of these
corporations are
choosing Livonia, thanks
to the economic vitality;
our second -to -none freeway access; proximity
to the airport, downtown and Ann Arbor; our
business -friendly, low -tax position; and our
exceptional public safety.
Mayor Dennis Wright
This past year really reinforces what has been
going on for a few years in our City. Our industrial
vacancy rate has hit a 15 -year low... and that's
before Amazon moves in!
Want more excitement? I've looked at some of
the information in the City's Annual Report for
the past year. This document (available on the
city's website at CityofLivonia.net) outlines
activities and statistics from Livonia's various
departments, commissions and boards.
One highlight from our Inspection Department
was the giant increase in the value of new
construction in the City last year. New building
activities jumped from $121 million in 2015 to
$181 million in 2016 — a 50%
increase.
All of this economic activity
is bound to have a ripple effect
on our community's stores,
restaurants and businesses.
We've seen it in the growth along
the Middle Belt/ Schoolcraft
corridor after Menards was built.
And I'm confident we'll see it
elsewhere in Livonia this year.
It's enough to make anyone
smile and slap a few high -fives.
Officials from Livonia, Amazon, Michigan
and Wayne County posed for a photo
after construction plans were announced
Dec. 20, 2016.

RATS AND VERMIN
A CONTINUING ISSUE
The presence of rats, mice, squirrels, skunks and other vermin are nothing new.
They share our space and have always been around — sometimes more
widespread, sometimes less.
To thrive, these rodents need two things available to them:
1. Food source (and water).
2. Shelter.
Food Source — Rats and vermin feed on the following:
1. Pet food left outside, or made accessible in a garage or shed.
2. Pet waste — yes, pet waste, not cleaned up is a food source for rats.
3. Bird feeders, squirrel food, bread, peanuts, popcorn etc. Much of that
food put out for the "friends" you enjoy, winds up feeding rats and vermin
4. Home vegetable gardens.
5. Household trash put out overnight in bags (instead of solid trash cans).
6. Check your plastic garbage cans to see if there is a small entry hole on
the bottom for vermin. Rats are unable to enter metal cans with
secured lids.
Shelter — Rats and vermin will make a home in:
1. Debris, wood on the ground, trash, tires, building materials.
2. Accessory buildings or garages or slabs without rat wall protection — they
can burrow under the slab and create a rat or vermin "hotel."
3. Skirted decks and decks low to the ground — while they may be attractive,
these decks can also provide living space for critters.
4. Holes in your foundation, home, garage or shed that lets them "bunk"
with you.
Take away the food and shelter and the rats and vermin will not come around.
• just a reminder that homeowners/residents are responsible for the
extermination of rats from their property.
• If there is an infestation, either a professional exterminator must be
utilized — or the rat infestation must be exterminated using
approved methods which will not be injurious to human health.
You do not want the vermin to go elsewhere.
• All structures and exterior property areas must be kept free from rat
infestation.
• After extermination, proper precautions must be taken to prevent re-
infestation.
Call Ordinance Enforcement for further information or if you wish to report a
problem at (734) 466-2588.
The City Assessing Department has an ongoing
review program of residential properties in the
City. The purpose of this program is to ensure
the accuracy of our records. The staff doing the
review will visit every home in the City and, if
possible, speak with the homeowner of the
property. They will be identified with City logo
shirts and photo ID. If the owner is not
available, they will compare the record card to
the exterior of the house. He/she may also look in the back yard.
If you have any questions regarding this program, please call the Assessing
Office at (734) 466-2220.

Greenleaf Commission on Sustainability
Livonia -An Evolving
Sustainable Community
Greenleaf Mission:
"Greenleaf encourages energy efficiency, conservation and
environmentally friendly practices in the City of Livonia"
Sustainability - What is it?
Sustainability is an emerging trend, but what exactly does it mean?
Sustainability means meeting your current needs without having a
negative impact on the needs of future generations. It also requires
citizens and communities to make environmentally -conscious choices
about the way they live. There are many positive sustainability initiatives
underway in Livonia. Let's see how they are evolving Livonia into a
sustainable community.
2017 City of Livonia Greenleaf Award - Recognizing
Environmental Leadership
The City of Livonia Greenleaf Award recognizes local businesses or
organizations that incorporate environmentally -friendly processes in their
daily business operations. The 2017 City of Livonia Greenleaf Award will
be presented at the Livonia Chamber of Commerce Leadership and
Awards Celebration Event.
Green Building Certification
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one of the
most popular green building certification programs. This certification
program was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and
consists of rating systems for the design, construction, and operation of
green buildings and homes. LEED certified buildings benefits include
lower operating cost and high lease rates. The Greenleaf Commission
will work with the U.S. Council of Green Buildings with a goal to help
Livonia building and home owners to be more environmentally
responsible.
Zero Waste Events
The Greenleaf Commission will continue its work on Zero Waste Events
The Commission has received several inquiries on implementing Zero
Waste Event concepts in local events. With Zero Waste Events, event
organizers plan ahead to reduce solid waste from the event, reuse
various elements such as banners, and set up recycling stations for
recyclable and compostable materials such as paper cups and plates,
food scraps, and plastic water bottles that are generated at the event.
Zero Waste Event concepts can be applied to all sizes of events — from
major city events to small events like neighborhood block parties. By
applying Zero Waste Event concepts to City of Livonia events, waste
from these events can be diverted from landfills and be recycled for
future use.
Livonia's Emerging Green Business Frontier
Several Livonia companies are building demand for recycled products
into a competitive advantage. These companies are developing new
products, new methods, and growing their businesses in Livonia.
Last Chance Logs to Lumber
This is a Livonia company started by Chris Last, a Livonia resident
that focuses on urban forestry utilization or "tree -cycling". This
company picks up logs from local municipalities, private residences,
tree service companies, and county and state parks. These logs are
then cut into workable, recycled lumber (versus grinding up logs and
disposing of them) and marketed to home owners, businesses and
municipalities. Using recycled lumber reduces disposal costs and
lumber costs for a project. Examples of this company's work —
Livonia Ford Field (Picnic Tables), Dossin Maritime Museum, and
Slo's BBQ.
GLR Advanced Recycling
GLR Advanced Recycling is owned by partners Mike Bassirpour, Ilene
Bischer, Ben Rosen and Sandy Rosen. This organization recycles
items like electronics, paper, plastic, and cardboard. Recently the
company launched a new division that focuses on processing scrap
vehicles. By utilizing new processes and technology for processing
and recycling scrap vehicles, the company processes more than a
1,000 vehicles a month and is on track to bring in $75 million dollars
in revenue. The Livonia location only processes scrap metal.
Potbelly Sandwich Works
Greenleaf Commission members met with Paula Tarhanich and
Natasha Zahor of Potbelly Sandwich Works (29579 Plymouth Road).
The managers and staff at Potbelly's had an interest in making their
operations at this location more sustainable. A number of areas were
reviewed and recommendations were made in several areas (e.g.
Energy Usage, Recycling, and Sustainable Operations).
Greenleaf Commission on Sustainability
The Greenleaf Commission is a citizen advisory group that works with
the City of Livonia and makes recommendations to the city on
sustainability areas. Sponsored by City Council Vice President
Brandon Kritzman, Commission members include Jim Baringhaus
(Chairperson), Betsy Calhoun, Heather Douglas, John Elkins, John
Grzebik, Paul Sgriccia, and Mike Shesterkin. Visit the Greenleaf
Commission page on the City of Livonia website and the Greenleaf
Commission on Sustainability Facebook page for the latest
sustainability information. For questions or comments on the
Greenleaf Commission on Sustainability, please email Jim Baringhaus

Z Z Remove all vehicles from the street during a snow emergency.
C/) . Vehicles not removed may be ticketed and/or towed.
Snow Removal Reminders
Snow Plowing Operations: Most major roads in Livonia are
maintained by Wayne County.
Parked Vehicles: All parked motor vehicles/trailers must be removed
from the roadway within six (6) hours of the declaration and notification
of a snow alert (emergency) or the vehicle is subject to ticketing and/or
towing (Livonia Code of Ordinances 10:63:060). (The Department of
Public Works will attempt to maximize the notification time beyond six
hours whenever possible based on all available weather data. The City
of Livonia media outlets listed above will indicate the time of the
declaration/notification of a snow emergency and a deadline time that
parked vehicles/trailers must be removed from the roadway).
Snow at the End of Driveways: Snow buildup at the end of
driveways will occur as the result of snow plowing operations. This is
unavoidable as the result of clearing the roadway. You may help to
alleviate some of the snow accumulation by clearing the area to your
left (facing the street) before the snowplow arrives. Depositing snow in
the roadway from shoveling/snow blowing the driveway is prohibited
and will only result in the snow being pushed back into the driveway.
The City is not able to return and clear individual driveways and is
unable to prevent snow deposits at the end of over 39,000 driveways
city-wide.
Mailboxes: Curbside mailboxes may become blocked by plowed snow
and the U.S. Postal Service has a policy regarding access to mailboxes,
which requires snow to be removed enough to allow the mail truck to
drive up to and reach into the mailbox for delivery Clearing the
mailbox to allow for service is the responsibility of the postal customer.
During snow plowing operations mailboxes can become damaged by
the weight of the snow thrown by the plow Check your mailbox before
each winter and "shake your mailbox" to see if it is sturdy enough to
make it through the winter season or is in need of repair.
Fire Hydrants: Fire hydrants should be cleared of snow Time can
make all the difference in an emergency and having the hydrant visible
and accessible for the Fire Department will greatly aid in their efforts.
Safety: When driving, keep a safe distance from snow plow trucks.
When your street is being plowed, keep children back and away from
the roadway.
Assistance: The elderly and disabled often need help removing
snow from their driveways. Please help if you can. The Livonia
Senior Center maintains a list of contractors for snow removal at
(734) 466-2555.

LIVONIAWINTER/SPRING NEWS I I
Livonia
Livonia residents have two options for recycling by using either the
Curbside Recycling Program or the drop-off Recycle Center. For
refuse or yard waste collection, please see the Refuse Information
or Brush Pickup pages on the city website.
Curbside Recycling Program
For curbside recycling, place items curbside in the recycling bin next
to your refuse on your scheduled refuse pick up day. Place all paper
recyclables in brown paper or plastic grocery bags in, on top of or
next to the recycling bin. If you need a recycling bin replacement or
a second bin, you may pick one up from Sanitation located in the
City Hall Annex or the Department of Public Works Yard located at
12973 Farmington Road, south of I-96. Items collected include
• Plastic Bottles & Containers marked on the bottom with the
recycle symbol I through 7. No Styrofoam. No motor oil or
antifreeze containers.
• Clear, Green and Brown Glass Bottles and jars. No
window glass, ceramics, dishes, drinking glasses, or light bulbs.
• Tin, Aluminum and Empty Aerosol Cans. Only empty
aerosol cans.
• Small Scrap Metal Items. Pot, pans and license plates are
acceptable. No clothing hangers.
• Plastic Grocery Bags. Stuff bags into single plastic grocery
bag and place in bin when full.
• Office, Computer and Loose -Leaf Paper (any color).
• Manila Folders with no metal clamps.
• junk Mail (including envelopes with windows).
• Glossy Magazines/Catalogs.
• Newspapers and inserts.
• Telephone Books.
• Paperback Books (or donate to the Library for the book sale).
• Brown paper grocery bags.
• Boxboard/Paperboard such as cereal and shoe boxes, etc. No
waxed -coated containers such as milk and juice cartons
• Corrugated Cardboard and boxes must be cut down to 2'x 2'
and bundled.
12 LIVONIA FALUWINTER NEWS
Drop -Off Recycling Center
The drop-off Recycling Center is open Monday through Friday
from 7:30 a. m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a. m. to 6 p.m.
The Center is located on the south side of Glendale Ave.
approximately 1/2 mile east off of Farmington Rd. between
Schoolcraft and Plymouth roads.
In addition to the items listed below for Curbside recycling, the
Drop -Off Center accepts:
• Larger pieces of Corrugated Cardboard.
• Vehicle and household batteries.
• Oil and antifreeze.
• Larger scrap metal such as frames, folding chairs, etc.
Tips to Reduce Waste
• Learn to recognize "avoidables" - anything you cannot
recycle or reuse, for example disposable razors, paper
plates and napkins.
• Purchase items packaged in recyclable material and avoid
items packaged in non -recyclable packaging like
Styrofoam.
• Avoid over -packaging. $1 for every $10 spent at the grocery
store is spent on packaging. Buying items in bulk saves
money, saves trips to the store, and greatly reduces
packaging.
• Switch to a reusable grocery bag or choose paper grocery
bags instead of plastic.
• Reuse plastic containers that are not recyclable such as
plastic tubs.
• Reuse the bags for your next shopping trip.
• Donate or sell reusable garments, repairable appliances,
and furniture to organizations.
• Save your egg cartons. In the Spring, reuse them to plant
seedlings. Small farms with chickens often appreciate egg
carton donations.
• Save reusable bows and boxes from the holidays or
birthday and reuse.
Unacceptable Items
• Styrofoam
• Light Bulbs
• Garbage
• Propane Tanks
• Paint Cans
• Medical Waste
• Flammable Liquids
• Household Cleaners
• Chemicals (Dry or Liquid)
• Wood Items
• Yard Waste: wood or trash
