Arthur•Jenkins, Editor Wednesday, April 17, 1946 Vol. 7, No. S
evise Plans for
Two Story School
Due to the fact that Federal
Aid and State Aid will not be
available this year, that the sur-
rounding high schools will not
take any additional students in
the fall, the Board of Education is
putting the problem up before the
public for discussion on means
of securing more aid to take
care of the problem which will
cor_front the educational system
in the near future.
At .their -regular meeting Mon-
day evening, the Board decided to
revise the present floor plans for
the first unit of the proposed new
school and these new sketches
and plans provide for the con-
struction of a two story building
with 14 class rooms, including a
science room, shop and home
economics rooms, plus a boiler
room in the first unit.
The cost of this unit including
sewerage disposal, sidewalks and
drive, grading and equipment has
been estimated to be $255,800. Be-
cause State and Federal Aid for
building this year will not be
forthcoming it will be necessary
for the Board of Education to
submit to the qualified electors a
proposal to bond the district and
to increase the millage.
Last fall the Board applied to
the State Plc:nning Commission
for State aid for planning and re-
ceived a grant of $1,587.80. An-
other application has been filed
for the surplus to complete the
planning. The state Commission
has a fund of $5,000,000 which
was set up for post war planning
and aid which comes from this
fund does not have to be repaid
nor is there any interest paid on
the money. All told the Board
will receive about $3,000.
At the same time, the Board
has authorized the Superintend-
ent to apply for Federal funds
available for planning. This is in
the form of a loan without inter-
est and must be paid back after
construction on the building has
started. A year ago the request
was turned down because of the
fact that the district would need
was to be available for several
Federal money to build and none
years.
Board members have been in-
vited by the various Parent
Teacher Associations to present
the facts at their"meetings and
by the end of the week most of
the P.T.A.'s should have all the
facts and figures which are avail-
able at the present time.
Any organizations wishing to
have Board members present
avaaable statistics at their meet-
ings should contact any of the
members or Harry O. Johnson,
Superintendent of the Livonia
Schools.
In the fall with the 9th grades
at Livonia and Newburg schools,
home economics and shop will be
added to the curriculum. These
will be available to both the $th
and 9th graders.

"All public schools will be clos-

The concensus of opinion among

than none at all." Tuesday, most
parents will be glad to shove their
offspring off to school providing
they are physically able and don't

There were times when Mother had to
wade through snow to carry wood to feed
the kitchen stove. She heated water on the
stove to thaw the pump. Then she pumped
more water and carried it in to be heated
on the same stove for cooking, scrubbing
and bathing—and for thawing the pump
again.
But on the farms of Michigan life has
changed, and is continuing to change.
The greatest factor in that change has been
the availability of electric power.
In the electrified farm home that lantern is
almost a museum piece. In the kitchen, the,,-
bathroom
he,:bathroom and the laundry, water, hot and
cold, is on tap. The ash pan is gone where the woodbox pineth.
The electric range is white and shining, and the calendar hangs over what was once the exit of the old black
stovepipe.
The milk and butter that used to hang in the well before Dad's dad built the milk house out by the windmill
are in the electric refrigerator now.
There's a broom in the closet for shooing -the cat—an electric sweeper for the Brussels carpet.
Out in Dad's domain electricity milks the cows, grinds the feed, hoists the hay and saws the wood. It separates
the cream and shears the sheep, warms the baby chicks as no hen could warm them, and kids the hens them•
selves into getting up before daylight to be about the business of laying eggs.
The Detroit Edison Company already has made service available to 34,000 of the 37,000 farms in its 7,600 square
miles of territory. Its objective is to see that electric service is within the "reach of every one of those farms.
To that end Detroit Edison now is engaged in extending its lines some 600 miles into every remote corner of its
rural territory. These extensions will be completed just as rapidly as materials and skilled labor can be obtained.
