Baby Causes
Oil Burner Fire
Friday, the Livonia Fire De-
partment was called to put out an
oil heater fire, which a six
months old baby was instrumen-
tal in starting.
The Kahola infant, 15087 Mer-
riman Road, was crawling around
on the floor and had apparently
twisted the knob on the oil
burner causing it to flood. When
Mrs. W. Kahkola lighted the stove
Friday morning it blew up in
her face.
Neither of them were injured,
but their home suffered smoke
damage.

The Livonia Township School
Board took action this past Mon-
day on the Cooper School annex-
ation question at their regularly
scheduled monthly meeting.
A resolution was passed by the
Board stating that they had not
had sufficient time to study the
problem of annexation and wheth-
er or not the Livonia Schools had
ample space to handle the Cooper
children, but that they would ac-
cept eighth and ninth graders as
tuition pupils and lend any pro-_
fessional aid possible.
It was the Board's opinion that
more time was necessary in order
to look into the problem more
fully. James Marsh, president of
the Cooper Board, has been noti-
fied of the Livonia Board's action.
Although this problem was dis-
cussed pro and con at great
length the Board decided to look
into the annexation further.
Official confirmation was re-
ceived from the Wayne County
Allocations Board that the schools
in the district would receive 8.4
mills for operation plus the 12
mills for building, and building
and site fund.
Word was also received from
Representative Dondero that HB
3682 had been passed by Congress
and the amount appropriated was
$2,500,000. The Superintendent
was authorized to apply for Lan-
ham Act monies for the operation
,and maintenance of Livonia
Schools.
The Board also took official
action at this meeting to name
the new high school the George
N. Bentley High School. A report
by Eberle Smith, School Archi-
tect, was made and it is hoped
that the high school will be ready
for the opening of school Mon-
day, September 8th.

vision of Mrs. Edward Harrison,

tation of the gong and gavel, pre-
sentation of gifts from 6th Divi-
sion. The climax o.f the program
was reached when Governor of

The first of the 1947 crop of
pheasants from the conservation.
department's Mason game farm -
850 10 -week old cock birds — are
being released this week, and
t, • some of them are going onto what
was considered a few years ago
\ to be excellent pheasant territory.
Bulk of the first week's plant-
ing will go to public hunting
lands where pheasants have not
been abundant—Dansville, Barry
County and. Gratiot-Saginaw state
game areas, Swan Creek wildlife
experiment station, and Jackson
✓ county lands in Waterloo state
recreation area. But one planting
also will be made at Prairie Farm, near Saginaw, where pheasant
production has been high, according to records of the checking sta=
tion maintained by game men there each year.
Fifty walleyed pike were brought up in the first lift of the nets
in Burt lake, as the midsummer fish population sampling _under
conservation departmentdirection 'got underway on Burt, Mullet
and Black lakes: Local fishermen and resorters are turning out to
watch the nets brought up and see the game fish counted, measured
and returned to the water.
The pheasant situation may be worse this season than it was
last year, Conservation Director P. J. Hoffmaster advised the con-
servation commission at its July meeting here. Pheasant and other
fall hunting regulations are to be fixed by the commission August
3 and 4 at the Higgins Lake conservation training school.
The pheasant outlook is unfavorable in spite of peak game farm
produetton and establishment of food patches, refuges and share=
cropping to leave grain in the fields for food on state lands, the di=
rector said.
"Apparently this is not a local situation but rather a c6untry-
wide condition," Hoffmaster declared. "Earlier this month represen-
tatives of conservation departments and fish and game commissions
from nine mid -western states met at Higgins Lake for their yearly
conference. Discussion of the pheasant situation naturally dominated
their deliberations, since their population had dropped considerably
in the several states. Representativs were there from the outstand-
ing pheasant producing states of the midwest. Invariably their ex-
periences with pheasants were comparable with those in Michigan.
In the early '40's their pheasant population reached a peak and then
fell into a continuous slump. Much research is being carried on by
the several states as -to the reasons for this but not two agreed
as to any single cause or combination of causes, and 'as a copse-
quence there could be no agreement on remedial measures. Only
one fact was uncontested—that pheasants are down in number in
every part of the,country.
"While we do not believe that present, conditions will be perma-
nent we cannot forecast when there Will lie material improvement.
We are, however, constantly studying the problem, as are the other
pheasant states and the federal government, and expect eventually
at least a partial solution will be forthcoming:"
A badger digging furiously through the sandy soil at Mason
state game farm lost a race for his life to two men with shovels, but
it was only after an hour and a half of hard work and 50 feet from
the starting point that they got him.
'The badger was discovered when it killed two birds in a large
pen enclosing pheasant breeding stock. Game farm manager Roy
Hunt credits the attendants' fast action with preventing serious
damage.
Game farm fences extend far enough into the soil to balk most
predators; but an occasional badger tunnels under them.

Vacation Proved
to be Busy One
When John Nelson, "make-up
man" of The Livonian left
recently for a ten day cruise of
the Great Lakes, he thought he
wouldn't see or hear anything
about newspapers or make-up or
anything connected with the busi-
ness.
The first night and day went
fine. There was no "shop" talk,
no work, nothing except the per-
fect peace and quiet provided by
the Great. Lakes when calm
weather prevails.

But John's peace and quiet was
not for long. There is a little
ship paper issued on the big boat
he selected for his trip, called
"The Voyager."
His curiosity "`Killed the cat."
As he rambled about the big ship
he heard what he thought was a
printing press in operation. He
looked into the room, and sure
enough there was a small print -
shop and two or three workers
were trying desperately to get out
the ship's paper.
Discovering John's trade, it was
only minutes before he was doing
his bit to help relieve the help
shortage in the plant of "The
Voyager." From then until the
ship docked, "The Voyager," like
The Livonian, made "the mail"
right on time each day.

Take the Man out of
Manure Handling
MANURE DANDLING is a great muscle builder for the
farmer who has no other formof exercise. You know,
farmers have plenty of tough, back -breaking chores,
besides pitching litter out of the barn. Today, though,
this time wasting labor can be a thing of the past,
thanks to the electrically powered gutter cleaner.
Some barn cleaners work on an endless metal chain
which runs in the gutter, removing litter by the con-
veyor principle. They clean the barn while you do
the chores ... needing no more than push-button
attention for the entire operation. Driven by a small
electric motor, and designed for any barn, this tie-
chanically-simple device takes only a fraction of the
time formerly needed by the pitchfork and wheel-
barrow method.
• The Farm Service Advisor at your nearest
.,vdison office will be glad to give impartial
advice on tested gutter cleaners. As a first step
in mechanizing your barn cleaning, why not
have him arrange for you to see one i`h oper-
ation? Talk with the owner and sqe for yourself
how simple and inexpensive the chore of gutter
cleaning can be when the man is taken out of
mange handling.
