Bell Introduces
"M-1 Carrier"
L I V O N I A N Page Seven
Livonian Want Fids Bring Results
Power -line telephone service
which permits the transmission of
six telephone conservations and
2400 volts of electricity simulta-
neously over one line has been
introduced here for the first time
in the state by the Michigan Bell
Telephone company.
Called "M-1 carrier" by tele-
phone engineers, the new system
enables Michigan Bell to provide
service in sparsely developed ter-
ritory where the construction of
regular pole -lines would be eco-
nomically prohibitive. '
Theodore H. Dawson, general
development supervisor for the
company, said power -line systems
similar to the one at Crystal Falls
would be introduced next year
at other small, rural communities
in Michigan Bell territory.
The newly equipped line here
runs 20 miles to Way Dam on the
Michigarnme reservior and serves
24 rural subscribers. The service
was made possible by a coopera-
tive construction project between
Michigan Bell and the Wisconsin -
Michigan Power company.
Special radio apparatus de-
veloped by the Bell Telephone
Laboratories and manufactured
by Western Electric literally
makes the power -line telephone
a miniature broadcating station.
Ordinary telephone current is
converted into high -frequency
radio impulses and put on the
power -line. At a telephone cen-
trat office, similar equipment
separates the radio impulses from
the electric current and converts
them back into regular voice fre-
quencies.
In effect, telephone conversa-
tions hitch -hike on electrical cur-
rent.

It's an old American custom
Family expenses go up as fast as fam-
ily income, and both ends just` seem
to barely meet. Is that the way it is
with you? If so, try this. Tuck a good
part (at least 10%) of your income
away in your bank account before
you start to spend each month. Get
by on the rest. It works like magic.

(Continued from page 1.)
Merriman Roads raised many ob-
jections to having a multiple res-
idence there. Attorney John Am-
brose suggested that Mr. Stanley
move his garage onto the C-1
property, disconnect it from the
main part of the house and con-
tinue to operate the rental serv-
ice from there. This of course
would not solve the apartment
question.
Nothing was decided and the
only good was that everyone got
plenty" of exercise getting to their
feet and gained some experience
in public speaking.
