Speaker. at Rotary
Doctor Henry J. Walch
Doctor Henry J. Walch, of the
Plymouth First Presbyterian
Church, and also a Plymouth Ro-
tarian, was the Thanksgiving
speaker last Monday at the Rotary
Club meeting.
Doctor Walch's topic, "Thanks-
giving and what we have to be
thankful for," was concerned with
the United States and what a good
place .this is in which to live. He
compared the 'United States to
Europe and Asia and in his com-
parison showed how we not only
have plenty to eat, but also have
freedom of mind, speech and of
the press.
"Despite this" he continued,
"there is a lack of Thanksgiving
in : the hearts of many today.

this is Ilrobably a very conservai

The Goodfellow fund will re-

the greater part will have to come
from the sale of papers. The
Goodfellow treasurer, Carl Wa-

about $1,000 was collected and a
similar amount in '46. This year
however, we want to top that
amount to make sure of a Christ-

"aeate and efficient railway transportation service for tie nation9'
FR01i THE OFFICIAL REPORT of the In-
terstate Commerce Commission on award-
ing a temporary freight rate increase of
10111c, we quote:
"The law requires us to give due con-
sideration, among other factors, to
the need of revenue sufficient to en-
able the carriers under honest, eco-
nomic, and efficient management to
provide adequate and efficient rail-
way transportation service for the
nation..."
A moment's thought should convince
any fair-minded person that keeping the
American railroads. healthy is to every-
body's advantage.
Every family, every businessman, even
the Nation itself is in danger when this
vital artery of American life is weakened.
And that threat is real,, and it is now. For
with increases in the cost of railroad op-
eration piling up one atop another, how
can the railroads' multimillion dollar pro-
gram for desperately needed new equip-
ment be continued? How can improve-
ments in roadbeds, yards, stations, rolling
stock, which took a merciless beating in
the war years of peak traffic, be carried
through?
They can't... UNLESS–
Unless the railroads are granted freight
rates adequate to meet the wage -and ma-
terials cost increases, and at the same time
keep hundreds of American industries busy
with new machinery and equipment orders.
Government requires that the railroads
maintain a high standard of efficiency be-
cause You demand it, Industry depends on
it, and the Nation must have it.
. We are asking a permanent freight rate
increase of the absolute minimum to meet
our need—which is in every sense your
need.
Our request should be granted.

Chatter --
Beginners—Mrs. Slaughter
Douglas Buchanan who
brought the bowl of gold fish to
school helped name them
"Orange" and "Spotty." The boys
and girls enjoy watching them.
Samie Russo brought some
pretty Christmas decorations for
our room.
The children are learning
Christmas songs and are also
working on gifts for their moth-
ers. David Smith fell against the
radiator and cut his head. The
boys and girls are now going to
be careful about the way they sit
in their chairs.
Dale Buchanan, Shirley Shulty,
Thomas Prehn and Jaya Halm -
berg are leaders for this week.
Grade 1—Mrs. Kautz
The following children have r -(-)t
been absent or tardy during the
last six weeks card marking
period: Marlene Barr, John Bar-
ton, Billy Blanchard, Carol Buf-
ford, Roger Diehl, Ronald Erick-
son, Connie Hartseo, Monica
Hayes., Joan Higgins, Mitty Mc-
Dermott, John McNally, Tommy
McNally, Janet Mearnic, Bror
Nilsson, Barbara 011is, Patsy Os-
trowski, Wayne Repella, Glen
Schultz, Katherine Small and
Rodney Stroebel.
Grades 2 & 3—Mrs. Rollenhagen
We are making Christmas de-
corations for our rooms and get-
ting ready for Christmas. We
drew names and will exchange
gifts. The boys decided to draw
boy's names and the girls, girl's
names.
The following were neither
tardy or absent: Ardetta Bissey,
Barbara Frey, Ronald Vowles,
Rebecca Bedwell, Roger Hayes,
Daniel McDougall, Edsel McCall,
and Michael Thompson.
Grade 3—Mrs. Ploeger
The third grade boys and girls
are working on the Michigan
project. We are now collecting
articles to illustrate the things for
which Michigan is noted.
Grades 3 and 4—Miss Shelton
The third and fourth grades
enjoyed their Thanksgiving holi-
day and everyone is back in
school again.
We are sorry to lose Paul Cum-
mings, our C. J. C. Secretary and
Treasurer. Paul moved out of
the district this week. We hope
he likes his new home and school.
Grade 4—Mrs. Mollon
We have just finished reading a
very good book entitled, "Baby
Island." We enjoyed it ever so
much. Now we have begun read-
ing "Miss Hickory" by Carolyn
Bailey. It is not a story about
real people so we do not care so
much about it.
We have started on Christmas
shopping and planning. How we
wish we could send something to
each little boy and girl all over
the world. We are sending pencils
and crayons through the Junior
Red Cross.
Our report cards brought few
perents for a chat with the
teacher.
Three children have been sick
a lot and they are: Donald Mun-
roe, Mary Alice Roberts and Billy
Ingall. Billy had a mastoid and
we are very glad that he is better.
All of the Dads arrived home
safely from their hunting trip.
A royal welcome awaited each
one even if he only got a red
moustache for his two weeks in
the woods.
Here is something that is really
news, one boy who never had an
"A" so far has resolved to have
all "A's" next card marking.
Guess who!
Grade 5—Mrs. Ronk
Robert Conway of Altoona, Pa.,
entered our room as a new stu-
dent. We hope you will be happy
to be a member of our class Ro-
bert.
Mrs. Burnette substituted for
our teacher, Mrs. Ronk, Wednes-
day, November 26. We enjoyed
having her as she taught us a new
game.
Mrs. Ronk returned Monday
after spending a few days in
Cableskill, N. Y. at her daughters
home. We are glad to have her
back with us. While in New York,
Mrs. Ronk mailed us each a card
of the scenery and caverns of
that state.
Thomas Smith celebrated his
12th birthday December 3. The
class sang "Happy Birthday." We
hope he has many more happy
ones.
At the present time we are
making plansfor Christmas de-
corations and will soon be putting
them up.
Grade 6—Mrs. Weaver
Fred Benson, Joe Canup, Bar-
bara Brooks and Beverly Bucha-
nan were on the decorating com-
mittee this week. They made the
Christmas scene above the black-
board.
Mr. Bingel took a group pic-
ture of the sixth grade last Tues-
day. Each child will receive a
picture. This is our prize for get-
ting the most people out for the
chest X-ray contest.
We are still studying Michigan
and are trying to learn something
new each day, also to work in
our scrap books.
Grade 7—Mrs. Kimball
Our arithmatic and spelling
contest ends this week. We won-
der which side will be the winner.
Elmer complains that too many
have been absent on his side.
Some of us have completed the
first two units of our history note
books and are started on the third
unit. Others are slower and are
still on the second.
The artists in the class are busy
making a Christmas border. Most
of our boys are learning to shoot
baskets in basketball. The Safety
Patrol and the Service Squad
went roller skating at Riverside
Arena Friday night.

It was announced that the

Christmas party.
The program for the evening
was a Midget Skit put on by the
Cubs of 282 and as Leonard
Walker, Cubmaster, was present,
he was called on to say a few
words about cubbing.
He stressed the fact that a boy,
previous to entering the cubs, is

things that they think might prove
injurious. He so aptly expressed
it, "Cubbing puts `do' in where
`don'ts' existed before." Mr.

seeds and rinds, fit nearly any

Ladies Night

the projector loaned by his high
school.
Entertainment was furnished
by very pretty and talented Jean
Richards who sang and played
the piano.
It was decided by the ladies to
have a sleigh ride and holiday
dance December 27.
Dr. Marie Timpona and "Ike"
Stevens, who were without their
respective husband and wife, fur-
nished the group with many
laughs when they received the
official OK to sit together during
the evening.
Out of town guests included:
Harvey Coon, Lyle Worden; Les-
lie Daniels, Roy Crites, Fred
Thomas, Robert Jolliffe and Wm.
Hartman. Master Plumber
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cogger
entertained their whole family
for Thanksgiving. Mrs. Grady
McKay, and daughter Ruth Ann,
came from Grand Rapids early in
the week and stayed until the
weekend when Mr McKay came
down to get them.
