Home My WebLink About2023-04-27 MinutesMINUTES OF THE ELECTION COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LIVONIA, MICHIGAN A meeting of the Election Commission of the City of Livonia, Michigan, was held on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the Livonia City Hall, 33000 Civic Center Drive, Livonia, Michigan at 3:32 p.m., at which time and place the following members of said Commission were present: Present: Paul Bernier, City Attorney Susan Nash, City Clerk Maureen Miller Brosnan, Mayor (via phone) Also Present: Janet Douglas, Elections Coordinator Rola Makki, Livonia resident Susan Nash assumed the duties as Chairperson of the Election Commission. Upon a motion by Commissioner Bernier, supported by Commissioner Brosnan, and unanimously adopted, it was: RESOLVED that the minutes of the Election Commission meeting held on February 17, 2023 are hereby approved. Chairperson Nash indicated the purpose of the meeting was to discuss candidate filing paperwork submitted for elected City positions. A Livonia resident, Rola Makki, filed to run for the Office of City Council on Monday, April 24, 2023. However, a review of her paperwork and check in the Qualified Voter File (QVF) found Ms. Makki had only changed her address to Bristol Street in Livonia on January 6, 2023. The one-year residency requirement to run for an elected City position was the topic for discussion. Commissioner Bernier read the section of the City of Livonia Charter that outlined eligibility requirements to run for an elected City position. Following discussion by the Commission members, the Commission advised Ms. Makki of her options to withdraw her candidacy in writing by the deadline of 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 28th or she could wait to be removed from the ballot by another candidate once the residency requirement was challenged. Upon a motion by Commissioner Bernier, supported by Commissioner Brosnan, and unanimously adopted, this meeting of the Election Commission of the City of Livonia was adjourned at 3:46 p.m. on April 27, 2023.
