HomeMy WebLinkAbout2025-04-15 Human Relations Commission Regular Meeting Minutes 7:00 pm – Tuesday, April 15, 2025 st Livonia Recreation Center – 1 Floor Conference Room 1) Call to Order a) Chair Glover called the meeting to order at 7pm. b) Members Present: Chair Rich Glover, Pastor Yvette Warren, Madison Ling, Ed Buison, Denise Collins-Robison, Alex King, Charein Faraj c) Members Absent: Vice Chair Haitham Fakhouri 2) Approval of agenda & minutes stnd a) 1 by Denise Collins-Robison, 2 by Pastor Yvette Warren. The minutes for the March 18, 2025 meeting was approved unanimously with the inclusion of Alex King as he was present. 3) Audience Communication a) None present 4) Chairperson’s Report a) Updates: None 5) Old Business a) Subcommittee updates i) HRC Community Message Podcast Review (Glover) ii) Outreach & Communication (1) Promote Pride (reported by Denise Collins-Robison) (a) Livonia Pride (501c3) will host event, which is an organization separate from City of Livonia and Livonia Democratic Club (b) Schoolcraft, June 21, 2025 (11a-2p) (c) Schoolcraft requirement to not publicly speak on politics. (d) Estimated at +40 tables. Will have a sign language interpreter. (e) Discussed the makeup of the Pride Committee and some potential changes (2) Use social media to share posts directly from Livonia Pride iii) Education (Denise Collins-Robison & Madison Ling) (1) Thoughts & Decisions on 2026 (a) Need to find judges that would be able to evaluate different mediums (artwork, music, poetry, etc.) (i) Livonia Arts Commission is a potential iv) Set up Visit (City Council President) (1) Priority towards the Livonia Downtown project at the moment v) Faith & Blue: (Pastor Warren) th (1) Event on Saturday, Oct 11between 11a-2p. (2) Location at the Livonia Police Dept parking lot (3) Free event and fun activities for kids (4) HRC will have a table (5) Charein Faraj to provide guidance on rights of people vi) HRC Photo Date (1) TBD vii) Partnerships: Zonta (1) Ed discussed potential partnership / sponsoring viii)Account Balance ix) HRC Goals: Awareness, Education and Engagement th x) 75 Anniversary of City (5/23) – Celebrated all year (1) Historical Society (2) Livonia Spree (a) Cost to have non-profit table is nominal, but hard to staff table for 6 days (b) Have the approval to have a “roaming table” of people/banner and hand out brochures and free swag (3) Livonia display xi) Alex King introduced idea of having a HRC Facebook page. (1) Invite City Communications to weigh in on process 6) New Business a) HRC Message to Community (Denise Colins-Robison) i) Recommends that the city HRC webpage needs to be updated ii) Consider suggesting changes to the Mayor for the mission statement b) Schoolcraft Multicultural Fair: Review i) Lower turnout, but was still successful c) Ride along and tour date i) Tour scheduled for May 22 at 7pm (time could change) w/ Chief to discuss ride along.
