THE MUNICIPAL LIBRARY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF LIVONIA
The Regular Meeting of the Livonia Library Commission was held at the Civic Center Library,
32777 Five Mile Road, Livonia, MI 48154 on Monday, May 18, 2015 and was called to order by
President Diane Policelh at 4.00 p.m.

CALL TO THE AUDIENCE
Karen Smith, Assistant Branch Librarian in charge of Children's Services, was a guest at the
meeting this evening.
CITY LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
51 City Librarian's Update — City Librarian Toni LaPorte updated the Library
Commissioners on the following:
• Livonia Today Magazine This will be a new magazine published on a
quarterly basis by the city highlighting various activities in and around
Livonia. Carl Katafiasz, head of Adult Services and Karen Smith, head of
Children's Services, will be writing articles for the premiere issue
• Budget Performance Report: Toni shared a copy of the Library's Budget
Performance Report which included figures through the end of March.

• Gleaners Food for Fines Livonia Libraries again participated in the Food
for Fines program. Patrons were able to donate canned and boxed foods
and have up to $5 00 in fines forgiven from their library account. We
collected 154 pounds of food which will help to provide 128 meals for
Gleaners Food Bank.
• Library Fines & Card Renewals Beginning May 18th, library patrons will
now be required to pay their fines in full before their library cards will be
renewed.
• Headphone Use In an effort to not disturb other library patrons,
headphones will be required in order to listen to audio on the library
computers or a patron's personal computer
5.2 Civil Service Report—
• Library Aide I — Cathy Moeller has been hired as our new Library Aide I
replacing Elaine Lawrenchuk who retired.
• Assistant Branch Librarian — Interviews took place for the Assistant
Branch Librarian position for the Noble/Sandburg Branches.
5.3 Assistant Branch Librarians' Monthly Reports — There were no questions or comments
this month.
Karen Smith, head of Children's Services, gave a brief overview of this year's Summer
Reading Program. The theme for this year will be "Every Hero Has a Story" and the
kick-off date for registration is Saturday, May 30th
5 4 Council Resolutions—There were no Council Resolutions this month.
5 5 Monthly Statistics—There were no questions or comments.
5 6 Correspondence—There was no correspondence to report.
5 7 The Library Network.
• MAP The Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) is up and running for the summer
season. Many new venues have been added for patrons to visit either free of
charge or at reduced rates with the use of their library cards.
• BookMyne This is a new app that can be downloaded to your phone or tablet to
search for books in the catalogue, check your library account, renew library
items or place holds on items you would like to check out. It is very user
friendly and, most of all, very convenient for patrons to use \,J
e' COMMISSION REPORTS
Commissioner Cathy Condon asked for a short explanation on how the Adult Summer Reading
Program works. Toni told her that adult patrons fill out slips for each book they read and those
slips are entered into a drawing for prizes at the end of the program.
FRIENDS REPORT
The Fnends just completed their May Book Sale which took place on May 15, 16 & 17, but we
still have not received word on the total that was raised.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
There was no unfinished business to address this month.
NEW BUSINESS
ell 9 1 Acceptance of Donations — Toni reported the following donations were received this
month. $50 00 from Kathleen Monroe in memory of Lendon Newton, $25 00 from the
Sauk Trail Questers, $90 00 from the Livonia Ladies Literary League in memory of Marge
Gade, the books I Wish You More and 41 Uses for a Grandma from the Livonia Civic
Center Circulation Department in honor of Elaine Lawrenchuk, $30 00 from Daniel &
Trinidad Turse in memory of Sadao Kasahara and $400 00 from Walter Zaremba.
On a motion by Elizabeth Newton, seconded by Donna Anagnostou, and
unanimously adopted, it was
#06-15 RESOLVED, that the Livonia Library Commission gratefully accept
the following donations. $50.00 from Kathleen Monroe in memory of Lendon Newton;
$25.00 from the Sauk Trail Questers; $90.00 from the Livonia Ladies Literary League
in memory of Marge Gade; the books I Wish You More and 41 Uses for a Grandma
from the Livonia Civic Center Circulation Department in honor of Elaine
Lawrenchuk; $30.00 from Daniel & Trinidad Turse in memory of Sadao Kasahara

Meeting was adjourned at 4 40 p.m.
