When the Guild representatives met with Miss Emilie Sargent, Executive Director of Detroit's Visiting Nurse Association she explained under what conditions Detroit's Association would be able to service our community. The committee then arranged for Miss Sargent to meet with Jesee Zeigler, Township Super- visor, Harry S. Wolfe, Township Clerk and Carl Wagenshutz, Township Treasurer. The Rev. V. J. Carson opened the program the invocation with Jesse Bennett as chairman and Virgil Morgan as toastmaster. Jack Fetterly gave a toast to the Dads and Lawrence Fetterly did likewise to the Sons. Bill Rambo from Plymouth talked about the outdoors and Dr. . C. J. Kershaw, the principal speaker, had as his topic, "Nature as a Designer and Engineer. Entertainment was furnished (Continued on page 2) Stark Brownies Plan Sleighing Party Brownies of Troop No. 15 of Stark School will hold their valentine party at the home of Mrs. Kendeigh on Febraury 15. The plans include a sleighing party and refreshments later the aome of Mrs. Kendeigh. Mrs. Jesse Bennett is the leader. Livonia P.T.A. Plans Pot Luck February 17 Livonia Center P.T.A. will hold their February Monday, Feb. 17 , the school with a pot -luck dinner at 6:30 p.m. Rolls and coffee will be furnish- ed and those planning on attend- inq are requested to bring their own dishes and silver ware. For those who can not attend the pot -luck, the business meeting will start at 8 p.m. A "Founders Day Program" has been planned it was announced. A GOOD WORD FOR A GOOD OFFICIAL. Whenever we see a public official doing an especially good job we are always pleased to say a good word for that official. This applies directly to Supervisor Jesse Ziegler of Livonia township. Almost overnight a township that a few years ago was chiefly a farming section of the county has grown to be a township -community of nearly 20,000 population with all the problems and the tribulations of a metropolitan center of that size. We might say the affairs of Livonia township are far more complex than those of a city of similar size because of the extensive area covered by the township. Supervisor Ziegler has grown up with these problems. He has been instrumental in finding the right 'solution to most of them. Probably no other resident of the township has a greater knowledge of its affairs than Supervisor Ziegler. He has been a tireless worker and through his efforts Livonia residents are now enjoying nearly all of the benefits and advantages of a metropolitan center, and without the disadvantages of a congested city. His friendly contacts with county officials and the board of supervisors have opened the door more than once to the advantage and betterment of Livonia township. Plymouth's big neighbor to the east, although possess- ing more than 18,000 population, is just beginning to grow, like all of this part of Wayne county. One can safely predict that within the next 10 years it will have a population in ex- cess of 25,000. Supervisor Ziegler has done an excellent job in directing the affairs of the township from a strictly farm- ing community to one of the highly important and desirable business and residential localities in Michigan. We are pleased to have an opportunity to commend him for the splendid work he has done in behalf of Livonia township and its residents. Group ,Adopts Sales Tax Diversion Resolution Sunday Sunday afternoon at the Liv- onia Center School, a -group of people interested in the school situation in this area met to adopt a resolution addressed to the Honorable Elton R. Eaton, Repre- sentative of the seventh district, the Honorable Clarence Reid, Senator of the eighteenth district and Governor Kim Sigler in which they requested -that the Sales Tax Diversion amendment remain as it is at the present time. The meeting was under the auspices of the Livonia Woman's club with Mrs. Violet Dallas as chairman. Mrs. Dallas set the spirit of the meeting by quoting Lincoln's second inauguaral ad- dress, "With malice toward none, with charity for all, with us "n the right as God gives us the power to see the right" Supervisor Jesse Ziegler and Supervisor Cook of Southfield township were both called on to state opinions concerning the amendment in question. The resolution which follows was adopted and signed by most of the people attending the meet- ing. WHEREAS, the qualified elec- tors of the State of Michigan ad- opted an amendment to the con- stitution providing for the diver- sion of a certain portion of the sales taxe monies to local govern- ments and schools, and WHEREAS, the area adjacent to Detroit is growing in popula- tion so rapidly, we feel that there is a need for sewers, water and fire protection 'n this area, and WHEREAS, There is a need for better schools, better school facili- ties, adequate teacher salaries in this particular areas, and WHEREAS, The fifteen mill tax limitation amendment has limi•t- lContinued on page 6) Dr, George E. Carrothers Stressed School and Community* Cooperation Praises Clarenceville High School And the Fine Job They Are Doing An Ann Arbor Rotarians, Dr. George E. Carrothers and also Associate Professor of Education at the University of Michigan was theguest speaker Monday at the weekly Rotary meeting at the Pen Mar. Dr. Carrothers who has .been aissoci.*ted with public schools and colleges for the past thirty- two years told of some of his experiences in the educational field. At the present time Carro- thers heads the North Central Association and in his spare mo- ments visits high schools in Mich- igan to see whether or not they are up to the N.C.A. standards and if not why not. Dr. Carrothers visited the Organize Girl Scout Leaders Club in Livonia The Livonia Township Girl Scout Leaders club met at the home of' Mrs. W. Hoegy, with this their"first meeting. The offi- cers are Mrs. John Calhoun, chairman, Mrs. Verle Carson, sec- retary, Mrs. Walter Hoegy, pro- gram chairman. The regular meet- ing of this group will be on the second Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be March 11 at the home of Mrs. Carson of New- burg. Clarencevilie High School Mon- day morning and again in the afternoon and he stated that this school was one of the best man- aged and run high schools that he had the pleasure of visiting in many years. The regular monthly, meeting of the Elm P.T.A. was held Tues- day, Feb. 4 with James Rossman, principal of the Newburg School as one of the main speakers. Mr. Rossman told of the; crises which our edcuation system is facing at the present time. Mrs. Weller, president of the Livonia Teachers club discussed the teach- ers and their .problems. Mr. Smits and his violin were vel y much in evidence playing many of the old time favorite tunes. M % r, P. M W -T.- Before Zoning Appeal Board Six appeal cases came before the Zoning Appeal Board Thurs- day evening at the township hall with all the members present. The first case was that of Ed. L. Matheson, 5438 Trumbull, who is desirous of manufacturing con- crete blocks in a building located on Plymouth road between Stark and Farmington roads. In the discussion it was pointed out by Mr. Matheson that two ex -service- men had a three years lease on the building and their machinery ordered. An objection from Mr. and Mrs. Ed Apel was received in the mail. In that this is in a C-1 district, the ;board denied this petition. Rudolph Horvath, 28301 Five Mile road, submitted a petition (Continued on page 7) yt Rosedale to Hea More About Incorporating On Friday, February 14 an open meeting of the Rosedale Gardens Civic Association will be held with the main subject of discussion, "the incorporation of Rosedale•" John Iglauer of the Michigan Municipal League, who spoke to the members of the Civic Associa- tion at the November meeting, will again be present for a further talk on this matter. Jesse Zeigler, Livonia township Supervisor, is also scheduled on the program and he will speak from the township's viewpoint. All residents of Rosedale are in- vited to be present to hear this discussion and to take part and ask questions regarding incorpora- tion. The Association's valentine party :will be held at the Club House on February 15 with danc- ing from 8:30 to 12:3,0. Members are again invited. rs, Earl O'Hara Girl Scout Council Chairman The annual meeting of the Liv- onia township Council for the Girl Scouts met on January 31, 1947 at Livonia Center School for the election of officers and annual reports. Two of last years officers were returned to office- They were Mrs. Earl M. O'Hara, program chair- man and Mr. I. E. R. Benson, pub- licity, The new board members are Mrs. John Perkins, Mrs. Viola Manning, Mrs. Chadwich. The colored movies on: Girl Scout Leadership were shown at the end of the meeting, Mrs. Henry Grimm Hostess Monday To Stark Auxiliary The Ladies Auxiliary of the Stark School held their meeting at the home of Mrs. Henry Grimm on February 3. Cards and bunco were the program for the evening and the "booby prize" was Avon by Mrs. Ed. Thatcher. Refreshments were home made doughnuts and thorouhly enjoy- ed by all. Alden Village Assn. People must 'learn to use their hands as well as their brains." Another point that he stressed was that in order to have smooth- ly running schools it was neces- sary for cooperation between the parents, teachers and boards of education. Split factions can cause more havoc than any other cause. Here he cited several instances throughout the state where cer- tain individuals because of their lust for power ruined the ,pos- sibilities of having ;good schools. Dr. Carrothers then told some of the history of the organization of colleges in Michigan in 1932 and how the bill finally was ;pas- sed in 1'939. "As a result, degrees can no longer be purchased nor colleges set up over night. At the present time there are '22 applica- tions for colleges on file and in most cases these are "flyby night" ideas to take advantage of the G. I. Bill of Rights. The Livonia Rotarians honored Paul Harris, a founder of Rotary who passed away January 27, with a minute of silence. For with Paul's passing all four of the "original Rotarians are gone." He was a dreamer on an internation- al scale. Alden Village Assn. Elects New Officers (Continued from page 1) board of directors. Of primary importance was the discussion concerning the build- ing of seventeen homes in Alden Village by the Newman Farms Development Company, which the Association feels will lower the value of real estate in that area. These homes meet all the re- quirements in regard to floor space, but have an utility room attached on the rear of the house. Alden Village has made plans to petition the Zoning Board in the Township to set up restrictions which they hope will prevent this type of construction in the future. Newly elected members of the board of directors for two years are: George Hembree, Paul Al- len, Mrs. Mabel Bowers and Jesse Hines. Pierson Xindergarten Holds "Open House" Miss Pauline Isham of the Pier - sop School, very :proudly exhibit- ed her kindergarten room at an open house a week ago to in- terested parents who were pre- sent to see the transition the kindergarten room has gone through during the ,past term. The attractions were: murals on the walls, the recent painting of all the furniture, new drapes, and a lovely play house for the children. Punch and fancy cookies were served the visitors and hot coffee and cake served later to all who staped for cards with friends and neighors. This was the first meeting under the new officers. The East side had lost at the ,previous meeting therefore the refreshments were provided by that side of the sudivision by the committee consisting of Mrs. G. W. Meier and Harvey Jahn. P.H.S.'s Rocks r;asket- :ball team are again tied for first place in the league, defeating the Belleville cagers last Friday eve- ning 44-33. The starting linup was Becker, Dobbs, McIntosh, Farwell, and Allen. Again DeWayne Beck- er walked away :being high ,point man with 1B to his credit. At the end of the first quarter the score was Plymoulhh414 Belleville -10; the half was Plymouth -26, Bell- ville-15; and at the third quarter it was Plymouth -30, Bellville-22. Plymouth stayed ahead constantly and Bellville did not even tie them at any timd during the ?game. Trenton lost their game with Redford Union last Friday night by a score of 38-33 This is Tren- ton's first defeat this season. That gives the Rocks a good chance to come out victor in the league finals. After the Plymouth-Bellville game, the student council spon- sored a 20c dance in the :gym of Plymouth High School. They danced to the music of recordings. The reason for this is that P.H.S. needs a lighted night foot- ball field, and they are trying to collect money to at least get it started. Livonia Junior .High School had a dance last Friday night at the Newburg Church hall. They had an orchestra from Farmington play for them. This dance was sponsored by the Livonia P.T.A. Last Saturday evening the Boy Scout troop S-1 of Stark put on a father and son banquet at the Newburg Church hall. There was a good attendance, good entetain- ment. The father of Carl Fine is very ill in the Wayne County General hospital. Mr. Fine has been hos- pitalized about. three weeks and they expect to be able to operate sometime during the coming week. Geraldine and Joan Thatcher and Bruce Walburn and a friend from Detroit went tobagganing at Cass Benton Pary last Thursday evening.
