Roy Gowman, Gowman's Phar- macy, was in bed this last week for several days with the flu. At a meeting held in Plymouth last Tuesday, plans were made to again organize a Western Wayne County hardball league with the possibility of three from Livonia- enttering this year. The Cooper School P.T.A. meet- ing held Tuesday, April 1 proved very educational as well as an enjoyable evening. C. Wheelock, Attendance*Officer for the Wayne County Board of Education-, lead a round table discussion on Child Labor Laws. Mr. Wheelock was moderator of the panel ` and other persons making up the . panel were Mrs. E. Pine, Girl Scouts; William Bailey, Boy Scouts; Mrs. Weaver, 4-H Club and Floyd Bingle, Cooper School. This discussion centered around activities afforded which would interest the children and help keep them in school until the age of sixteen. Consolidation was also brought up at the meeting. The house was beautifully de- corated with candelabra, palms and baskets of white snapdragons and gladiola. The ceremony was performed in front of the fire- place with Wanda wearing a beige gabardine suit with black accessories. She carried .a white Testament and an orchid. Evelyn Phillips of Plymouth, the bridesmaid, wore a suit of cocoa brown and a corsage of yellow roses. Kurt Rogalla, De- , troit, was best man. The Rev. Pearl McPherson of Anderson, Indiana officiated and Bernice McClosky, Middlebelt road sang, "Oh Promise Me" and (Continued on,page 4) Ueusion Group To Reel and Elect On April 8th at 1:30 p.m. the Wayne County Extension Group, Stark, will hold a meeting and election of officers for the Wayne County Executive Board at Hope Chapel on Six Mile Road. Miss Emma De Bord will pre- side at this meeting and conduct the election of executives. Mrs. Brewer will give a book review, and there will be a recreation -period conducted by Mrs Kreger. Mrs. Coates will demonstrate to the group how to make corsages. On April 15th this group will meet at the home of Mrs. Jesse Bennett . for a pot -luck luncheon to finish the March lesson on- drapes n-drapes and curtains. Court Judges, State Board of Agriculture. Of the Township officers, Jesse Ziegler gained the most votes with 623 followed closely by Harry S. Wolfe and Carl Wagen- schuttz with 615. This year there were two of- fices to be filled that of Vice President and Secretary. Paul Nixon is the new Vice President and Mrs. Montgomery is the Sec- retary. After the business meeting a delicious lunch was served. ixed Doubles Tournament Starts April 19th With the Bowling season rap- idly drawing to a close as far as league competition is con- cerned, of special interest to bowlers in the area, is the an- nouncement of the dates for the Fourth Annual. Mixed Doubles and the Sixth Annual Men's Doubles tournaments at the Li- vonia Recreation Allevs. Clarence Hoffman states that the Mixed .Doubles, ` with $100 grand prize, trophies, and which last year paid off 46 places, will start April 19th and run through May 18th with bowling ,afternoon and evenings. The Men's Doubles is scheduled to start May 12th and run thru .June 15th. The Grand Prize is $200, and includes trophies. (Continued on page 5) wild Radio Tower on wolfram Farm For Greyhound System One of the largest transporta- tion systems in the United States has chosen a site in Livonia Township for the erection of the first of a series of radio towers for two way communication be - ween buses and bus terminals. The Greyhound lines this week announced that construction has begun on a one hundred foot FM radio tower on the Fred Wolf- ram farm, located on Middlebelt read between-Schoolcraft' and Five Mile roads. This latest device will enable the drivers to talk with the bus terminals in regardto sickness, -schedules and passenger transfers or the terminals to talk with the bus drivers. According to the Greyhound officials, these instal- lations are for safety purposes and to better their service. They contemplate erecting towers in: Detroit, Lansing, Bay - City, Grand. Rapids, -.Kalamazoo (Continued .on page 5) Gasoline Fire Damages Damen Home .Careless use and handling of . gasoline caused $450 damage to the home and contents of the Damen home at 11360 Cavell Fri- day evening at 8:30 p.m. Mrs. Johannah Damen, her daughter and son were in the basement experimenting with a model airplane when their dog tied with a leash moved to an- other section of the basement and overturned and broke a glass jug of gasoline spilling the contents on the floor. The gasoline was ignited by a coal burning hot water heater. Mrs. Damen and her daughter were trapped momentarily, but managed to get out through a basement window. Insurance will cover the $300 damage to the home, but there was no. insurance on the con- tents. This episode should prove a warning to other persons not to keep gasoline in the house and a warning to service station oper- ators not to sell gasoline in con- tainers other than those prescrib- ed by law. The program consisted of two movies made Jack Van Covering Free Press Wildlife Re- porter who lives in Rosedale Gar- dens '-One movie "Spearheads in the Sky" was - about the Canadian goose. It told of the life of goose from birth- to its migration. The other reel "Sharp Eyes" told of the Bluebird, Kildene, and Song Sparrow. There were also some interesting shots of the garter snake, toad and tadpole. The boys and girls enjoyed the movies immensely. The business meeting be- gan at 5 p.m. Dinner was. served at 6, by the ladies of the chapel. The tables, decorated with beau- tiful yellow umbrellas in April showers of violets were the work of Mrs. Beatrice Bowen and her committee. Judge Healey from Juvenile Court in Detroit, Rev. Wooley from Rosedale Gardens, and Mrs. Ada Watson from Wayne County Rural School were guests at dinner, and later took part in the panel discussion on "Juvenile Delinquency." Louis Balmes and Barton Rogers were on the panel, also. The panel brought out many important causes of delinquency. The violin selections played by Mrs. Thom- son were greatly enjoyed. The three litt:e sixth grade boys from Elm School, who gave dramatic readings were a sur- prise and a treat. Everyone com- mented upon their poise and talent. The meeting adjourned at 9:50 o'clock. Elm P.T.A. to Sponsor Pot -Luck in May The flag salue at 7:30 p.m. lead by Mrs. Little opened the Elm regularly scheduled monthly P. T. A. meeting last Tuesday at the school. Mrs. Meta Hoenecke, School Nurse, gave a talk on "Ring worm of the scalp." Today all the students at Elm School will be given an examina- tion for ring worm. At the busi- ness meeting approval was given whereby the Parent Teach- e.rA C atlon woultl .spoaspr the Cubs and the Scouts for the com- ing year. In May, the P.T.A. plans on having a Pot -Luck to raise funds in order to send their of- ficers to the National P.T.A. convention which will be held in Detroit early this summer. Mrs. Ruth MacBride, Visiting Teacher, gave a very fine talk on the "Basic needs of boys and girls " Mrs. Proctor assisted by Mrs. Maltby reported on the school grounds and equipment at Elm as well as the rest of the Township. Harry O. Johnson, Superintendent, was present to answer any questions concerning the school system. Refreshments were served at the close of the meeting. Bookmobile Visits Livonia Junior High The children of Livonia Jr. High were visited Tuesday, April 2, by the Wayne County libraries bookmobile. The bookmobile is a fine sturdy trailer. It has flore- scent lights and carriees about 1500 books. The schedule the children. used in visiting the bookmobile was as follows: 8B 11:30; 8C and D 12:1'a, 9C and D 11:45; 9A 12:30; 8A 1200; 9B 12:45. The bookmobile will come every two weeks. Both teachers and pupils greatly appreciate this new service and are looking for- ward to the return of the book- mobile. The whole Mitchell family of Coventry Garden has been con- fined to their home with the flu and its after effects. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Zobel of Edington road left on Thursday for a southern vacation trip. Mr. Zobel has not been well and is hoping the southern sun at New Orleans will be beneficial to him. Rega aijogs in Wayne Coin ty Now in Effect A regulation governing the in- stallation of all septic tanks and sewage disposal systems through- out Wayne Countty was placed in effect by the Wayne County Board. of Health Monday, March 31, 1947. This regulation states that per- sons wishing to install a septic tank; the field, or both must now make application for a permit to do so from the building depart- ment of their particular town- ship, village, or city. Where there is no local. building department, application must be filed with the County Health Department, division of Engineering and sani- tation, Henry Ruff Road and Michigan ave., Eloise, Mich. All construction of septic tanks and sewage disposal systems is to be in accordance with standards which have been established by the Wayne County Board of Health. Because of the sewage problem which now exists throughout the county, the regulation was deem- ed necessary in order to protect the . citizens from the threat of dangerous diseases caused by sewage pollution of streams, riv- ers, and open drains. A public health regulation to provide for a ,permit system and the supervision of the construc- tion or installation of sewage disposal facilities by the Board of Health and to provide for sewer connections to premises where ad- equate municipal sewers are available under authority given to the Board of Health in Act 306 of the P.A. 1927 as amended by Act 198 of P.A. 1941, (1929 CL 6545-6554; MSA 14.161-14,170). PERMITS No person, firm, association or corporation, in the area of Wayne county in which the Wayne coun- ty board of Health has jCtristic- tion, shall construct, install or cause to be installed any septic tank, leeching bed, cesspool or other sewerage disposal device for the disposal of water carried sewerage, without first obtaining a permit from the Wayne county board. of Health. Disposal of Liquid Waste The disposal of liquid waste from public. semi-public or pri- vate premises and from septic tanks and other sewerage treat- ment devices shall be in a man- ner approved by the, county board of Health. Public Sewer Connections -time for Compliance Except where there is no public sewer available, all new buildings .shall ;be connected to such public sewerage system at the time of construction, and existing build- ings shall be connected within one year of the adoption of this re- gulation. This regulation became affective last month. PENALTY Any person, firm, association or corporation who violates any of the provisions of these regula- tions shall be ,prosecuted accord- ing to the statutes in such case made and provided and shall deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction, thereof, shall be punished by a fine not exceed- ing the sum of $100 or by impri- sonment in the county jail not exceeding 90 days or by both such fine and imprisonment at the discretion of the court. Severability Clause Should any provisions or sec- tions of these regulations be held invalid for any reason, such hold- ing shall not be construed as affecting the validity of any of the remaining portions of these regulations, it being the intent that the remaining portions of these regulations shall stand not- withstanding the invalidity of such provision or section. The regulations of this depart- ment are hereby declared to be immediately necessary for the preservation of the health of the public and are, hereby, given immediate effect upon publication according to law; unless otherwise specified in any regulation. The above regulation was ap- proved by the Wayne county board of Health May 22, 1946 and the township board at their meet- inq last Monday appointed Everitt Mason, Building Inspector, as agent and collector for Livonia. The board also announced that a standard fee of $3:,00 has been set up bq the county. Facts concerning the minimum specifications of the septic tanks, lines from house to tank, tile field and seepage filter bed as well as diagrams may be secured from the Building Inspector at the township hall.
