HomeMy WebLinkAboutHRC 2022-11-15 HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, November 15, 2022 – 7:00 p.m. I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. by Chair Glover. Members Present: Richard Glover, Denise Collins-Robinson, Becky Drzwewicki, Carmen Kennedy-Rogers, and LaShawn Thomas, Director of Government Affairs Not Present: Haitham Fakhouri II. APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda for the November 15, 2022 meeting was approved unanimously. III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes for the September 27, 2022 meeting were approved unanimously. IV. CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT a. Madonna University MLK Celebration and Events: MLK logistics and format changing due to change in staffing structure; $500 award for the winner; planning to facilitate a full week of celebration and recognition b. 2023 DEI/Racial Justice Forum: DEI forum to be hosted in later January 2023, hosted at the library; invite other groups (City Commissions, non-profits, larger business, groups with DEI purpose, etc.) to discuss DEI efforts and effective strategies; focus to be positive and uplifting, purpose is to be informative; opportunity for audience participation; Chair Glover needs to connect with the Mayor to seek feedback c. HRC Recruitment of New Members: If members know of community members interested in joining, contact Chair Glover; seeking 3 or more new members d. MASCO Event Review: Becky Drzwewicki reported. Focus was on individuals with disabilities; Well attended (50 or more people); robust conversation and eye opening information shared V. Relationship Development Discussion about sending letters to relationship partners we are in contact with and send NDO awareness letters; LaShawn Thomas will connect with Josh Sabo to determine contact list and language for letter VIII. Old Business a. Updates from our subcommittees i. Non-Discrimination Ordinance (NDO) ii. Research & Data No updates. iii. Outreach & Communications No updates. iv. Racial Justice Forum v. Education Carmen Kennedy-Rogers discussed the planning of the 5th annual HRC Student Contest ● Members determined HRC will host an ESSAY contest only. IX. New Business Becky Drzwewicki provided a recommendation that HRC focus on mental health awareness in Fall 2023 due to: local election year, new school year for students, and September is Suicide Prevention month. Mental health impacts all of us despite our differences. Opportunity for unity and connection for the community. LaShawn Thomas Youth Commission is hosting a youth summit in early February. This is an opportunity for HRC to work with Youth Commission on mental health. Chair Glover requested a flier with more information. X.
